negative space exercise These three figure studies, done by highschool students, were executed by means of finding only the negatve space around the model. In this case, the model wore a bathing suit and several accessories such as purse, leg warmers etc. Students started with a sheet that had been completely covered with a single colour. They then painted the model by finding the negative shapes around her and between legs etc. Finally they were asked to paint the accesories to define the figure a bit more. The first started with a dull yellow/green, the second with an acid lime green and the third with a rich blue. Students were given half an hour to complete the composition. Even in that short time they have created very well observed and interesting figures! I can imagine this working quite well with fabric. Starting with a single piece...perhaps a small print or amorphous hand dye. Other fabric shapes could be cut to define the negative space and with careful attention, the figure ( or interior) would emerge. The resulting image will have a unity as well due to the overall starting point of a single pattern. |
