WEEK LONG WORKSHOP AT TRAVERSE CITY ART CENTER
This workshop called THINK LIKE AN ARTIST, was an exploration of the elements and principles of art as it applies to the fabric medium. Every day, the class designed two wall pieces each of which focused on a particular element of composition. Black and white works started the week as a general exercise in placement, scale, contrast and arrangement within a composition. Next, students were given a linear piece of fabric that had to be incorporated into a full expansion of a linear composition. Colour was approached first as a limited palette of only two colours. We then tried portraiture a more difficult subject because we have such preconceived ideas about the figure. We talked about how to absorb influences from other art we like and the class made a composition based on a particular artist they admired. Finally they chose one of their best pieces and expanded it into a triptych .
Interspersed throuout the week were lively controversies, lots of laughter, critiquing exercises, a field trip to an art exhibition, more laughs, 15 minute pop quiz and lots of laughter.

Cheryl's sister Harriet, produced these, deciding also to expand her linear composition into a triptych. These two were so talented and yet so different in their expression. It was wonderful watching them critiquing each other, suggesting changes and thoroughly enjoying their work!
